The iPad or Not

The word around town is the new iPad. So I was amused when I noticed a gentleman using both an iPad (must be version 2) and a notebook - the paper type. In fact, it looked like a filofax. Don't know what a filofax is? Ask your grandpa.

He was writing away on the notebook - the paper one, while his iPad was resting underneath. Hey, if you don't want your iPad, or obviously can do without one, pass it over.

Misprice

Copywriting can be a hazardous job, if only because the world can witness their booh-boohs. And this is not the first time I am seeing this.

Dud Discounts

This looked too good to be true, and even before the Great Singapore Sale! Guess what, it was too good to be true. I hauled 5 items to the counter and was told that only 1 of the items qualified for the 25% discount. The rest? Pony up the list prices. Retailers are abusing the phrase "storewide discounts". How can 20% of the items in my basket that qualifies for discounts be considered "storewide"?

What a fake.

New Kid on the Block

I was wondering where to put these series of interesting ads on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. Well, here it is. I must qualify that these videos weren't taken by me.

Postcards for the dead

I must hand it to the Japanese. They can think of making anything, miniaturizing, and selling them. They do this even for the dead and departed. Here are invitation cards you can buy and invite people to that last journey.

Money Tea

It is Chinese New Year, and restaurants are all getting in on the occasion by offering one meal package or another. This restaurant shows it understands the sentiments of the occasion.

Video Cart

This is really not new, but in the context of Singapore supermarkets, it is the first time I've seen it. Carts with attached video streaming in-store commercials are now available in Cold Storage supermarkets. Apparently it is an eye catcher because some kids where following me all over as I pushed the cart around the supermarket.

This man certainly wears his brands proudly on his neck!

Jack of all Fruits

I've rarely seen Jackfruits as big as these. And here, there's not one but a bunch stacked high. I wouldn't be able to carry one off by myself, not to mentioned the entire lot!

Torn fashion

Nowadays, it is not surprising to find women (and some men) going about town with very little clothes on the back, and their bums. But this must take the cake. This woman (actually, I couldn't tell if the person was a man or a woman) is going around with torn up hose. No, she/he was not a vagrant. It's just fashion, you know.

Ox'picious Year

2009 is turning out to be a terrible year, by all accounts, though we are only one month into it. For the Chinese, 2009 has just started and true to tradition, we wish everyone a 'Fat' year. Many pass red packets around, but you can buy an ox home, like the one above too. It is carrying sacks of faux gold ingots on both sides and the whole ox costs S$168. It isn't made of bronze or gold, just some plastic, I think. I saw this in a neighbourhood shop just before the Chinese New Year.

I wonder if someone bought it?

Beefy meal

I don't know what the Physics is behind this. but the beef is being cooked - yes cooked. The beef is placed on a leaf, which in turn is held in a gauze container which in turn is being cooked in a 'live' flame. At first, the meat was tough - really rare, but as the cooking progressed, it became medium to well done, depending on when you want to eat it. Really tasty too.
Get it at Sakae Sushi.
p.s. You need to 'refuel' to get the mean cooked really well. Don't to shy to ask.

Lip on a teacup

A human was here. Notice the lip mark on the cup. Yes, this is your regular morning cup of tea in the Heartlands of Singapore. Retails for 90 Singapore cents, circa 2008.

Extremely ripe

I understand what 'Ripe for eating' means. But 'Ripe for good eating?' This grocer must be very anxious to make a sale, even to the extend of mangling the English language. Truly you'd do anything to make a sale.

For a moment there, I thought I wasn't in Singapore, such is the language on public display.

Brand consciousness

New products flood the market today. Many have interesting and attractive packaging, others , like the ones above, have amazingly, similar ones, right down to the layout and colour scheme. Monmilk - touted as milk from Mongolia, originated the design. Yi Li is also from Green Food. What's the difference - in the content, I mean?
